1939 brochure issued by the "Bataviasche Kunstkring" announcing a sales-exhibition of Balinese art.
1939
Small brochure issued just before the war broke out. Uncertain times then which was reflected in the price-level. This was lower than the sales-exhibition from 1937.(see Tobo 633) The most expensive carving by I Rodja costed 45 Dutch Guilders, and the most expensive carving was a rangda for 60 Guilders. The deer with off spring, depicted on the cover, is listed as number 18, done by an anonymous artist. Also at the drawing-painting section we see lower prices. Although a pen-drawing of a Balinese cremation by I B Made Djatasoera demanded 80 Guilders.

Original exhibition-brochure from 1948 organized by the "Bataviase Kunstkring" (art society in Batavia).
1948
Rare brochure of a sales exhibition of Balinese Art organized by the "Bataviase Kunstkring". Although the Dutch painter Rudolf Bonnet selected the artworks, this exhibition is not under the name of the Pita Maha. This art movement stopped in 1942 due to the war. Significant is the price difference, compared to the brochure from 1937. For a carving of I Rodja the highest price was 95 Dutch Guilders then, in 1948 a Rodja carving demanded a price of 500 Guilders! See the photos of the pages of the brochure. Most likely reason was the enormous inflation of the guilder in the few years after 1945.

Very rare brochure of the second sales exhibition of the Pita Maha in Batavia (Djakarta), former Dutch Indies, in 1937, offering for sale Balinese quality art.
1937
Important time document in the history of Balinese woodcarving. We notice that Ktut Rodja's work demanded the highest price (95 Dutch guilders) for a carving of a seated lady, probably the lady on the cover of the brochure. I Bagus Poetoe Mas is the second expensive with 75 guilders and I Geremboeang third with 65 guilders. These were pretty big amounts in 1937, so the artwork must have been of the highest quality. How Rudolf Bonnet and Walter Spies, the members of the Pita Maha commission, decided on the price is unknown. But, being two outstanding artists themselves, they probably have looked at the quality and the originality of the statue, and the difficulty of the carved subject.

Extremely rare item. Die hard Bonnet collectors must search for years to get their hands on this calendar. Tong Tong was a cultural foundation in The Hague to preserve the Indie legacy. For this purpose they published a magazine (Tong Tong magazine, now called "Moesson") and organized cultural events like exhibitions and fairs. It was during an exhibition of works by Rudolf Bonnet that an idea was born to create a special Rudolf Bonnet-calendar. It is the only calendar ever published about an Indie-oriented artist.
