TOBO-00810
1930-1940
Woodcarving mother child, executed in art deco style, Bali 1930-1940. The master carver did some genius things; he found an elegant solution for the ever difficult feet; he just covered one foot with her sarong in a beautiful subtle way. Also the ears are enlarged, with holes for the soebengs ,to increase the expression of the statue. And looking at the head, the woodlines are clearly visible, the carver tried to work with the structure of the wood. This is the essence of art deco; creating the ideal line(s) in an art object. Both, the skill needed for carving such a master piece, and quality of wood are NOT available in modern Bali anymore. Pls click on the photo to see more images.
