Major art work, although it has been carved for the tourist market. The size and weight indicate a possible private order, or a hobby piece from a very talented carver. Or maybe this piece was used as a promotion piece for an exhibition. The fact is that this carving is too good to be labeled 'souvenir' or 'commercial art work'.
In de 1960s, when this piece was probably executed, many woodcarvers were active on Bali. But only very few were able to carve this type of quality carving. This postwar piece can easily hold its own against the Pita Maha pieces from before 1940! |
